Dr Franz Böhmert

Dr Franz Böhmert, born in 1934, was elected as the first Ehrenangehöriger (Honorary Member) of the DFL in 2004. He was President of SV Werder Bremen from 1970 to 1999, before becoming Chairman of the club’s Supervisory Board until his death on 28 December 2004 aged 70. Born in Gröningen, Saxony-Anhalt, the clinic director was a member of the League Committee of the German Football Association (DFB) from 1977 to 2000 and was on the Executive Board from 1987. He subsequently served until October 2004 on the Executive Board of the former Ligaverband (now the Executive Committee of the DFL) and on the DFB, which appointed him as an Honorary Member. Franz Böhmert accompanied the German national team as head of the DFB delegation at tournaments including their triumphant 1996 European Championship campaign in England.

In partnership with general manager Willi Lemke and coach Otto Rehhagel, his term as President of SV Werder Bremen yielded two Bundesliga titles, three DFB-Pokal wins, and victory in the 1992 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup. Franz Böhmert’s association with SV Werder Bremen dated back to 1963: he became team doctor in the club’s first-ever season in the Bundesliga. After his death, the street next to SV Werder Bremen’s stadium and premises was named after Franz Böhmert.
