DFL Deutsche Fußball Liga today released the exact schedule for further Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 matches. All matches have now been set through to the 27th matchday (March 16 to 18/19, 2018).
On the 23rd and 24th matchdays, the fixtures for some of the clubs playing in the UEFA Europa League the Thursday before have been scheduled for the following Monday to help those teams to regenerate. Eintracht Frankfurt will play RasenBallsport Leipzig on February 19, 2018 (8:30 p.m.), while Borussia Dortmund will meet FC Augsburg on February 26, 2018 (8:30 p.m.). In addition, the encounter between SV Werder Bremen and 1. FC Köln on the 26th matchday will take place on Monday, March 12, 2018 (likewise 8:30 p.m.).
In all these cases, no Bundesliga 2 match will be contested on Monday. Instead, an additional (fourth) match will be scheduled for Saturday (1:00 p.m.).
In order to help the teams taking part in the UEFA Europa League to regenerate, it has also been decided to make use of the option of scheduling a third Bundesliga match on Sunday, with Borussia Dortmund meeting Hannover 96 on March 18, 2018 (1:30 p.m.).
The reason for scheduling Bundesliga matches on a Monday is to avoid scheduling matches for the Europa League participants in a Thursday-Saturday sequence and, hence, to protect competitive conditions for Bundesliga. This date is fixed regardless of the outcome due to considerations relating to the award of the national media rights. Given the heavy investments in media rights, the rights holders require a reliable basis for planning as the value of the individual matches is significantly affected by match days and kick-off times.
