7 July 2021 – Today, DFL Deutsche Fußball Liga released the exact schedule for the matches in the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 until the end of September 2021. Fixtures have now been scheduled until the sixth matchday of the 2021-22 season in the Bundesliga and the eighth matchday in Bundesliga 2.

As announced in June, the 59th season of the Bundesliga will open with Borussia Mönchengladbach playing host to Bundesliga champions FC Bayern München on Friday, 13 August (8:30 p.m. CEST). The first Saturday evening match of the season will be the encounter between Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt on 14 August (6:30 p.m. CEST). On Saturday, 11 September, the fourth matchday sees fixtures between two of last season’s European qualifiers, Bayer 04 Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund (3:30 p.m. CEST), followed by runner-up RB Leipzig taking on FC Bayern (6:30 p.m. CEST). After the first matchday of European competition, the fifth Bundesliga matchday will feature the first of ten “relief matches” per season, in this case between VfL Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt. These will take place on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. CEST in order to provide the teams participating in the UEFA Europa League and the UEFA Europa Conference League with more recovery time.

Matches now confirmed in the Bundesliga 2 programme include the Hamburg derby between FC St. Pauli and Hamburger SV on the third matchday (Friday, 13 August, 6:30 p.m. CEST), the encounter between newly promoted FC Hansa Rostock and SG Dynamo Dresden on the fourth matchday (Saturday, 21 August, 8:30 p.m. CEST) and the Rhine-Ruhr duel between FC Schalke 04 and Fortuna Düsseldorf on the fifth matchday (Saturday, 28 August, 8:30 p.m. CEST). SV Werder Bremen and Hamburger SV will meet on the seventh matchday on Saturday, 18 September (8:30 p.m. CEST). The exact schedule for the first two matchdays of Bundesliga 2 was already released on 30 June.

Based on the fixtures that have now been scheduled, there will also be no Friday matches on the fourth matchday of the Bundesliga or the sixth matchday of Bundesliga 2. This is because the FIFA release period has been extended by one day up to and including Wednesday, 8 September. To allow national team players sufficient time to recover, a Bundesliga match will instead take place on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. CEST on the fourth matchday (in addition to the ten relief matches per season). In Bundesliga 2, the sixth matchday will see five matches take place on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. CEST instead of three.

Supercup 2021 between Bundesliga champions FC Bayern München and DFB-Pokal winners Borussia Dortmund will be held at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK in Dortmund on Tuesday, 17 August (8:30 p.m. CEST).

The exact schedule for the next Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 fixtures is expected to be announced between 30 August and 3 September, following the draw for the group phase of the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Europa League and the UEFA Europa Conference League.
