European Leagues sets the course for the future in terms of personnel and content – DFL CEO Marc Lenz confirmed on the Board of Directors

6 March 2025 – The European football leagues association European Leagues has made important changes in terms of personnel and content at its 50th general assembly in Frankfurt am Main.
At the General Assembly, a new Board of Directors was elected for a term of four years. DFL CEO Marc Lenz was unanimously confirmed in office. The committee consists of 13 members and is responsible for the strategic direction of the association. Marc Lenz has been a member of the Board of Directors since 2022 and represents the European Leagues – including the top 5 leagues – in the UEFA Club Licensing Committee, which is responsible for the European club licensing and financial regulations.
The European Leagues has also elected a new president: Claudius Schäfer (Swiss Football League/Switzerland) will succeed Pedro Proença (Liga Portugal/Portugal). Mathieu Moreuil from the English Premier League was elected vice-president. After six years, the previous managing director Jacco Swart was bid farewell. In addition, the decision was taken to readmit LaLiga from Spain to the European Leagues, so that the top five leagues are again all represented.
The DFL Deutsche Fußball Liga has been hosting delegates from the European Leagues since Tuesday. The programme included, among other things, a seminar day in cooperation with the German Football Association (DFB), various committee meetings and a celebratory evening event to mark the 20th anniversary of the league association. A special welcome was given to the representatives of the Ukrainian professional league.
“Over the past 20 years, European Leagues has developed into an established association. Building on this, the interests of the national leagues – as the heart of professional football in Europe – must be represented even more clearly and purposefully in the future. With this in mind, important personnel and content-related decisions were made today, such as the reintegration of LaLiga and the election of the new president. My warmest congratulations go to Claudius Schäfer and Mathieu Moreuil,. They can count on a cooperative partnership with the DFL,” said Marc Lenz, who attended the General Assembly together with Vito Esposito (Director of Institutional and Political Relations & Regulation) on behalf of the DFL.
Lenz also explains: “Global football is at a critical point where important decisions are being made in terms of sporting policy that will have long-term effects. Further constructive talks will be needed in the coming months – particularly with regard to sustainable financial and ownership structures, issues of competitive balance and the future development of the international match calendar. These topics will shape the future of the national leagues.”
